In Pisa on June 16, 2022, after a break due to Covid in 2020 and in 2021, the most heartfelt festival in the entire city, the Luminara of San Ranieri (Pisan vernacular for "luminaria"), will be celebrated.
On the eve of San Ranieri, the city's patron saint, thousands of candles placed on wooden frames are lit every year to draw the architectural forms of churches, palaces and towers along the Lungarni.
After the lighting and thanks to the switching off of public and private lighting, the effect of these flickering lights offers a unique suggestion with an ancient flavor.
The evening concludes with a rich fireworks display around 11:30.
