June 24 is a very important date for Florence as we celebrate St. John, the city's patron saint. The entire city celebrates in a variety of ways, with the holding of cultural events celebrating Florence's historical roots. The celebration has ancient origins, dating back to a time when nobles and lords donated tapers and candles to honor the saint. Over the years, the tapers became increasingly beautiful and rich, and were given in part to the Baptistery, while the others were sold, with the proceeds going to the church.
